A seed planted in Ribamar

Nick Uricchio and Miguel Katzenstein founded Semente in 1982 and established the workshop in Ribamar, close to Coxos. The name means “seed” and expressed their idea of starting something that could take root and grow.

What began as a shared project became one of the long-running names in Portuguese surfboard building. The workshop remains connected to the waves and surfers around Ericeira rather than operating as a distant production label.

Designed around the surfer

Nick moved to Portugal in 1979 and began making surfboards before founding Semente with Miguel. Decades of shaping, testing and direct feedback from surfers continue to inform the range.

Semente says every board is designed by Nick. His approach starts with the individual surfer: their level, dimensions, style and the waves they want to ride, with the finished board adjusted around that conversation.

From design to finished board

The Ribamar workshop brings design, shaping, machine work, glassing and finishing into one process. The photographs show blanks moving through the rooms, hands refining rails and contours, and each finished board receiving its final details.

The current range spans performance shortboards, twins, eggs, midlengths, longboards, guns and scaled boards for younger surfers. Standard dimensions provide a starting point, while custom orders can account for volume, tail, rails, fin system, construction, finish and artwork.
