It started with a fridge door

Before Ferox, there was drawing, art school and learning to surf. While studying in Caldas da Rainha, Octávio made his first surfboard from an old truck fridge door. He began shaping for himself and friends, and made the surfboard the subject of his final degree project.

That connection between design and surfing became Ferox, based in São Brás de Alportel.

Inside the workshop

Shape, colour, material

Octávio’s interest in making boards led him to study resins and polymers. Over the years, his work has included cork and locally grown agave, alongside more conventional constructions.

The boards carry that same attention to colour and detail: a floral SOÃO, or the blue and green pair made for Alex Botelho. Each is a small glimpse of what leaves the workshop.

The people around Ferox

A board for the surfer

Custom shaping has also taken Octávio into adaptive surfing. His work with Nuno Vitorino and Alex Botelho explored boards built around different needs in the water.

That thread continues in Ferox’s feed, including this moment with Pedro Palma and his new board. Alongside the shapes and finishes, there are the people who ride them.

Out in the water

Beyond the shaping room

Away from the workshop, Ferox follows its surfing community into the water. André Lang finds room inside a wave; Pyettro Maia throws spray through a turn. These sessions sit alongside the new boards and work in progress from São Brás de Alportel.

January to April 2026

Making a new beginning

In January 2026, a fire destroyed the Ferox factory, its equipment and boards. Alex Botelho organised a fundraiser to help Octávio rebuild.

By April, Ferox was sharing boards for Alex and a new laminating room filled with work in progress. This is the new space, photographed by Ferox on 24 April.
